President Donald Trump formalised new rules for stablecoins at a White House ceremony on 18 July 2025. He signed the Genius Act in the East Room. The event attracted lawmakers and industry leaders USA Today.
Stablecoin rules set to protect consumers
According to USA Today the Genius Act creates a clear framework for stablecoins. It ties tokens to recognised assets such as the US dollar. The law sets capital requirements and oversight. It tasks financial regulators with regular audits. It aims to boost confidence in digital payments.
Trump praised the bill as ‘a revolution in financial technology’. He thanked the sponsors and crypto executives for their work. He said the law would spur innovation and safeguard users. He added that the industry would grow faster under clear rules.
The House backed the bill by 308 votes to 122. All Republicans and dozens of Democrats supported it. The Senate approved the measure in June. It marks the first major US crypto law in decades.
Crypto advocates welcomed the new rules. They said the law would protect consumers from unstable tokens. They also said it would enable wider use of stablecoins for commerce and remittances. Industry groups called the moment a turning point for digital finance.
Critics voiced concern over potential conflicts. Senator Elizabeth Warren warned of risks if a president benefits from rules that affect his own assets. She argued that strict ethics checks must follow.
Regulators now have six months to draft detailed guidelines. The Genius Act will take full effect in early 2026. The law promises to shape global norms for stablecoin use. It cements the United States as a leader in crypto regulation.
