The actions of the men in blue have once again come under the magnifying glass after two Cape Town police officers appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 19, for charges relating to kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice and fraud.
It is alleged that the duo arrested an innocent person as a replacement for their suspect, who escaped out of their custody. According to IOL, the officers who are based at the Maitland police station arrested a suspect for housebreaking and theft in Maitland in May, however, the suspect required some medical attention and was transported to the Somerset Hospital where he then allegedly escaped.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk indicated that after the suspect disappeared, the officers then returned to the Maitland area where they found another person on the street whom they arrested instead.
Van Wyk said the officers did not inform anyone regarding the incident, however, detectives only made the discovery the following day when the innocent man was processed, as per News24. Meanwhile, the accused were released and the case was postponed to October 27 for further investigation.
