The two runners, both members of the Atlantic Running Club, were training for the Two Oceans Marathon set to take place this coming weekend.
Further details reported by several media outlets revealed that the female runner fell approximately ‘100 metres’ down the embankment after she was flung over the barrier wall and subsequently broke her leg.
Following the assistance of the doctor, who was out running at the time, she was winched up street level by the crane of a fire truck in a full-scale rescue operation.
Despite no broken bones and being discharged from the hospital to recover in his Milnerton home, the male runner’s brother told The Atlantic Sun that he has been left traumatised after also being flung into the air.
‘He is traumatised. He isn’t even speaking,’ said Phill, adding that the jogger sustained bruises on both legs, stitches on his lips and a broken tooth.
‘Thankfully he caught hold of the barrier after impact and didn’t slide down the cliff.’
Commenting on the huge impact left on his brother as well as his family, including two school-going children and a baby, Phill added, ‘He is on bedrest, so there is no income for his family. People should not drink and drive at all. This is as good as murder because you’re endangering lives and negatively impacting those who rely on those lives.’
The unidentified 24-year-old driver subsequently appeared in court on Tuesday, 1 April, after being arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol as well as reckless and negligent driving.

A female and male runner was rushed to hospital after an allegedly drunk driver ploughed into them on Victoria Road in the Atlantic Seaboard around 7:40am, reports Cape {town} Etc.
One of the runners was subsequently flung over the wall of the road as a result of the hit.
According to Ward 54 Councillor Nicola Jowell, who took to her social media platform, the driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle while driving down the stretch, causing him to hit the two runners.
‘A fire department truck [was] used to rescue the women down the embankment,’ said Jowell. ‘She is critical but stable [thanks to] the medical doctor who was running close by and rushed to assist. The second [runner] is believed to have a broken leg.’
Jowell added that the male runner has since been checked into the hospital and ‘seems to be okay’. The woman who was flung is still being assessed, ‘but signs are looking positive’.
The driver was reportedly taken in by SAPS.
Cape {town} Etc has reached out to SAPS and City’s Fire & Rescue Services for further details.
