Two young boys, aged four and 23-months, died in a fire in the Bardale Informal Settlement near Blue Downs on Monday afternoon [October 19].

The City’s Fire & Rescue Services received an emergency call about an informal structure alight in Parliament Street at about 1pm. Mfuleni and Belhar’s crews were immediately dispatched to this incident. Unfortunately, the structure was completely engulfed in flames upon arrival.

“Whilst extinguishing the fire, the crews were alerted that two persons were inside the structure. The bodies of two boys, aged 4 years and 23 months, were discovered amongst the debris,” said the City’s Fire and Rescue Service’s Jermaine Carelse.

The fire was extinguished at 1.40pm and a fire service Chaplain was requested to assist the bereaved family. The scene was secured and handed over to the South African Police Service.
