Two inmates have died after a violent stabbing incident at the Pollsmoor Remand Correctional Facility earlier today. The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed that the situation is now under control while investigations into the cause of the attack are underway.
According to Smile FM, DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said the violence broke out when officials at the prison came under attack from inmates.
‘The incident involved a stabbing attack directed at officials, prompting the use of force in an attempt to restore order,’ Nxumalo explained.
He added: ‘Calm has since been restored at the facility, and the injured have been transported to hospital for medical treatment.’
The DCS confirmed that two inmates were fatally wounded during the altercation. Details surrounding the circumstances that led to the attack remain limited, and officials are still gathering information.
Nxumalo noted that an internal investigation is already underway, and further updates will be provided once more facts have been established.
Pollsmoor Prison, located in Tokai, is one of South Africa’s largest correctional facilities and has faced longstanding challenges related to overcrowding and violence. Authorities are expected to release additional information as the probe continues.
