A 32-year-old man was shot while sitting in a gold Volkswagen after leaving the court at approximately 1:44pm.
Six minutes later, a 31-year-old court visitor was shot in the face and back while running, after hearing gunfire.
The shootings come after a fatal attack outside the same court on 5 September this year, which led to increased police patrols (Justice and Constitutional Development).
Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman said the attacks happened a few minutes apart and are believed to be gang-related.
‘The incidents are being treated as gang related,’ she told the People’s Post.
A murder case has been opened and detectives are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact Athlone Police on 021 697 9238 or 021 697 9239.
Family members and court users described the scene as chaotic and traumatic.
As the investigation continues, one resident said the violence has left people afraid to attend court and to go about daily life.
