A violent shooting in Bonteheuwel left two people dead and another injured on Wednesday evening, sparking a fast-moving police chase through nearby streets as suspects tried to flee the scene.
The incident unfolded at the corner of Kiaat and Jakkalsvleilaan streets, where gunfire erupted and quickly drew the attention of passing police officers, as per EWN.
According to police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana, officers happened to be driving through the area when they witnessed the shooting in progress.
Police immediately gave chase after spotting a silver Toyota Etios believed to be carrying the suspects, who allegedly opened fire during the attack on the victims.
Inside the vehicle, investigators later uncovered more details about what may have led to the violence.
Police confirmed that the car had been stolen earlier in Athlone, adding another layer to the unfolding investigation. A 9mm pistol, also reported as stolen in Athlone, was recovered inside the abandoned vehicle.
After a high-speed pursuit, the suspects eventually ditched the car on another street and fled on foot, disappearing into the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The human toll of the shooting was severe.
‘A 22-year-old male victim sustained injuries on his body and was rushed to the nearest medical facility, whilst the other two male victims, aged 29 and 38, who were declared deceased on the crime scene, sustained injuries in their upper and lower bodies.’
Police have now opened cases of two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder as they continue to piece together what happened and why the attack took place.
Authorities have also called on members of the public to assist in tracing the suspects, who remain at large.
‘After a lengthy chase, they found the car abandoned in another street and the suspects had fled on foot. Upon searching the car, they found out that the car was carjacked in Athlone and inside it, they found a 9mm pistol that was also stolen in Athlone.’
Gun violence remains a persistent concern in parts of Cape Town, where hijackings, stolen firearms, and gang-related activity often overlap in complex and dangerous ways. Incidents like this one in Bonteheuwel highlight how quickly ordinary streets can turn into active crime scenes, and how unpredictable these confrontations can be, even for law enforcement.
For now, the focus remains on tracking down those responsible and understanding how a stolen vehicle and firearm became part of a deadly chain of events in the heart of a residential neighbourhood.
