A R50 000 reward is on offer for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the assailants responsible for shooting two Metro Police Officers and one motorist on the N2 this morning.

City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith says the the incident took place during the early hours of the morning.

“Information at hand indicates that the Metro Police officers were dispatched to the N2 inbound near Borcherd’s Quarry just after 02:00 after camera operators detected rocks on the roadway,” he says.

Reports state that a motorist drove over a rock and pulled over to the side of the road to attend to a burst tyre. While doing so, a vehicle pulled over and one of the occupants shot the motorist.

Two Metro Police officers arrived at the scene and the suspects opened fire on them.

Smith says that both officers were shot during the incident.

“The female officer was wounded in the left leg and her colleague was shot in the upper right leg and left side of his groin. Both officers are 44 years old.”

The assailants fled the scene and stole an officer’s firearm, radio and other personal effects of the officers.

No update is currently available on the wounded motorist.

“The City of Cape Town condemns this callous attack and we will work very closely with the South African Police Service to ensure that those responsible are brought to book.”

Smith is encouraging members of the public with any information regarding the incident to report it to the South African Police Service.

The South African Police Service or the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre can be contacted on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline.
