A two-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after being caught in a shooting in Kensington on Saturday night, leaving residents once again confronted with the devastating impact of gun violence on innocent children, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The incident unfolded at around 10:10pm on 4 July in Glider Crescent, where the toddler was walking with his mother when gunfire suddenly erupted.
According to preliminary information, unknown suspects riding on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire in the direction of the mother and child before speeding away from the scene.
The young boy sustained gunshot wounds during the attack and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. His condition has not yet been disclosed.
Police responded to reports of the shooting shortly afterwards and found the injured child at the scene.
Detectives from Kensington SAPS have since opened an attempted murder investigation as they work to establish exactly what led to the shooting.
At this stage, the motive remains unknown, and investigators have not confirmed whether the mother and child were the intended targets or whether the boy was struck during an attack aimed at someone else.
No arrests have been made.
The latest shooting adds to ongoing concerns about firearm-related violence affecting communities across Cape Town, where innocent bystanders, including children, have too often become victims of shootings.
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
