Two murders broke the nation’s hearts recently. Both were young victims, and both deaths occurred at places often tied to ‘living life’, not losing it – nightclubs. The murders occurred two weeks apart.
Olivia Sieff, an 18-year-old was first hit by a car outside Tin Roof, a Claremont nightclub in late January. The second murder saw 17-year-old Hlompo Mbetse lose his life outside Madison Avenue Rivonia in Johannesburg in early February.

Our eyes as South Africans turned to the justice system and this is what the respective Magistrate Courts told us: both suspect murderers were granted R3000 bail.
In Sieff’s case, a woman in her thirties suspected of the murder made an appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court. She was released on R3000 bail according to News24 and People’s Post.
In Mbetse’s case, the suspected murderer, Dante Kade Liang who allegedly stabbed his fellow King Edward School student, appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court. He was also granted R3000 bail according to Sowetan Live. His bail conditions included the ‘stern’ slap on the wrist of having to deregister from all social media platforms.
His case has been remanded until April.
As for our second call of trying to find some sort of action being taken, we turn to the respective clubs to investigate what they are doing to ensure tighter security and precautions for their patrons.
Cape {town} Etc reached out to both Tin Roof and Madison Avenue Rivonia to see what the establishments plan on doing in light of security. We await their responses.
