Dubbed ‘A Night on the Streets’, the initiative urges South Africans to contribute and spend 18 May experiencing solidarity with the homeless by sleeping outdoors. This endeavour seeks to deepen awareness of homelessness in South Africa and underscore that it is often not a matter of choice.
Taariq Halim, regional editor of Independent Media’s Cape publications, emphasised the urgency of addressing homelessness, stating, ‘But as winter approaches and more people find themselves in these circumstances, something must be done to help them and reopen our eyes to the humanness of the problem around us.’
He expressed the belief shared by U-turn and Independent Media that ‘we can all do something, no matter how small, because many small things can grow into something meaningful.’
Valerie Govender, chief communications officer at U-turn, expressed gratitude for the partnership with Independent Media, stating, ‘U-turn is honoured to partner with Independent Media. Through their extensive reach and influence, Independent Media will help amplify the message of ‘A Night on the Streets’ and shine a spotlight on the work of U-turn in supporting the homeless community.’
