A snippet of UFC champion Dricus du Plessis’ fight against Israel Adesanya is gaining traction on social media – and perhaps not for the (obvious) reason you might think.
In a video posted by @reel_southafricans, Du Plessis can be seen taking a breather while his team tends to him. His coach, Morne Visser, tells him what to do when he gets back into the ring, Cape {town} Etc reports.

However, the American commentators were left perplexed when the Afrikaans translator for Visser did not translate what he said in Afrikaans to English.

Instead, he ‘translated’ Visser’s words to Afrikaans. Or rather, translated Afrikaans to English then directly back to Afrikaans… i.e. not grammatically correct either.
Watch:
In the video, the translator can be heard saying: ‘Hy gaan baie nat wees (he’s going to be very wet)’. Visser said ‘Hy gaan baie glad raak’, which means ‘he’s going to get slippery’.
‘Hy’s glibberig,’ the translator then said. Visser said: ‘Jy lyk perfek’; the translator responded with ‘Hy lyk 100%. (he looks 100%)’.
The American commentators noted that something was wrong, saying: ‘The translator is not speaking English for us. He’s not, there’s no way that’s English’.
The translator ended with ‘He’s done, he’s tired. You’re going to have to moer him.’
South African Instagram users shared a laugh on the platform:
- He is keeping company secrets😂
- Lol translated the whole first round from Afrikaans to Afrikaans 🔥
- This guy lied on his CV🙆♂️😂
- Deserves a bonus 😂😂😂
- That’s how you win, he’s the Untranslator 😂😂😂😂
