Sue Garrett, general manager of Supply, Pricing & Marketing at Flight Centre Travel Group, noted that these results were not surprising, given Australia’s strong appeal as a destination for visiting friends and relatives (VFR). She highlighted the convenience of recent and upcoming non-stop flights between Johannesburg and Perth, with SAA resuming the route and Qantas set to relaunch it in 2025.
Based on responses from over 170 000 customers over the past year, the data measured the likelihood of Flight Centre customers recommending their recent travel destinations.
Globally, Perth’s 96% satisfaction rating was closely followed by Brisbane and Queenstown, both at 94%. Portugal topped the country rankings with a 94% satisfaction rating, followed by the Cook Islands at 93% and Australia at 92%.
Flight Centre Global Managing Director Andrew Stark commented that the findings reflect diverse travel preferences across the agency’s wide network of destinations.
He noted that Portugal, known for its historic architecture and charming culture, and the Cook Islands, celebrated for its beaches and friendly locals, were standout destinations.
Australia also performed well, with three of its cities – Perth, Brisbane, and Melbourne – making the top 10 list. New Zealand was another favourite, with Queenstown and Christchurch both ranking in the top 10 cities.
