The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has firmly rejected claims made by Kelly Manus, a former teacher at Symphony High School, accusing the department of unfair dismissal and mishandling her sexual harassment case, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The allegations, made in a TikTok video posted earlier this week, have sparked significant public attention.
According to Manus, the dismissal stemmed from a sexual harassment complaint she filed against a fellow educator, who also happens to be the principal’s husband.
Manus alleged that the principal took retaliatory action, preventing her from transitioning from a temporary contract to a permanent teaching position after she reported the inappropriate conduct.

In response to the serious claims, the WCED issued a detailed statement, emphasising that Manus’ accusations were not based on factual events.
According to the WCED, Manus was not eligible for conversion to a permanent role because she was appointed to a substitute post, which did not meet the criteria outlined in the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) Collective Agreement 2 of 2024.
The statement clarified that Manus’ position was always intended to be temporary, with the contract set to expire on 31 December 2024.
The WCED also addressed the sexual harassment complaint, stating that the matter was taken seriously.
The department confirmed that it initiated informal proceedings after Manus declined the option of a formal disciplinary hearing. Despite this, Manus was cautioned for her allegations, and no further complaints were made about the educator involved.
Further clarifying the situation, the WCED reassured the public that Manus was not left without employment, as she has since been appointed to a new position at a different school.
The department concluded by urging the public to avoid disrupting educational activities due to the social media post, stressing the importance of maintaining a peaceful environment for learners.
‘There are always two sides to a story, and it is crucial to consider all perspectives before passing judgement,’ the WCED added.
This statement highlights the department’s commitment to upholding fair procedures and addressing serious allegations with due diligence, while ensuring that teaching and learning continue without unnecessary disruption.
