As the holidays come to an end, the country can look forward to the start of a new calendar year. The Department of Basic Education has published important dates of note.

Matric:
Last year’s Grade 12 pupils can look forward to 2022 matric results on the 19 January but exam centres should have them by the 20 January 2022 according to Education minister Angie Motshekga.
Rechecking and remarking will commence on 3 February 2023. Students wanting to resit Martic in order to improve their results can register for May/June 2023 or October/November 2023 exams.
“Learners will have until 8 February 2023 to register for the 2023 May/June exams – or if they want to register for the 2023 October/November exams, the deadline is 15 March 2023,” says the education department.
School terms for 2023 are as follows:
2023 will have 199 school days across the four terms, with 32 days set aside for school holidays and eight public holidays in between.
Administrators and teachers in Johannesburg during School Holidays 2023 Johannesburg are expected to have an early start. According to BusinessTech, “Teachers and administrators in Johannesburg will begin the year a bit earlier, starting up from 9 (inland) and 16 (coastal) January in preparation for learners to return”.
Inland schools
- Term 1: 11 January to 24 March
- Term 2: 12 April to 23 June
- Term 3: 18 July to 29 September
- Term 4: 10 October to 13 December
Coastal schools
- Term 1: 18 January to 31 March
- Term 2: 12 April to 23 June
- Term 3: 18 July to 29 September
- Term 4: 10 October to 13 December
