Convicted triple axe murderer Henri Van Breda will appear in the Constitutional Court today in a leave to appeal against his current conviction and sentence.

Van Breda was convicted for the murders his parents Martin (54) and Teresa (55), as well as the murder of his brother Rudi (22) and the attempted murder of his younger sister Marli (20). The gruesome murders took place at the family’s home in luxury Stellenbosch estate De Zalze in January 2015.

Last year, Van Breda was handed three life sentences with an additional 15 years for Marli’s attempted murder. He also received an additional 12-month sentence for the obstruction of justice. The sentences are all to be served consecutively.

At the beginning of his trial, Van Breda pleaded not guilty, claiming that an unknown assailant had snuck into the house and murdered his family.

This is Van Breda’s fourth bid to have the conviction and sentencing overturned.
