A rush of grief swept through the Vaal after two more learners died in hospital on Thursday, raising the death toll from the Vanderbijlpark crash to 14. The accused makes his first appearance in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The collision happened on the morning of Monday, 19 January, when a private scholar transport minibus attempted to overtake several vehicles and hit a side tipper truck on the Golden Highway. Eleven learners died at the scene and others were taken to nearby hospitals.
Gauteng police arrested the 22-year-old driver after he left hospital. Police say he now faces 14 counts of culpable homicide, plus reckless and negligent driving.
‘The 22-year-old scholar transport driver is now facing 14 counts of culpable homicide, as well as reckless and negligent driving,’ a police spokesperson told EWN.
Families and neighbours gathered at hospitals and the mortuary. One relative told News24 reporters the loss felt ‘unbearable’ and asked authorities to ensure justice and safer scholar transport for all children.
Investigators continue to take witness statements and to check permits and vehicle fitness. Authorities said more details will emerge when the accused appears in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court today.

The accused has reportedly abandoned bail and will remain in custody until his next appearance scheduled for the 5th of March.
Gauteng education department have announced counselling support and burial assistance.
