Tragedy struck on Wednesday morning, 15 January 2025, when a man lost his life in a freak accident involving a container truck, a light delivery van and another vehicle occurred near Macassar, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to reports, the container truck was travelling on the N2 Highway in the direction of Strand at around 7:30am when its overheight cargo struck the Kramat Bridge, detached from the truck and collided with the two vehicles.
The driver of the one vehicle sustained fatal injuries after his vehicle was crushed by the container, Arrive Alive confirmed.
‘Five other victims – three males and two females, aged between 34 and 37 – sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,’ added the report.
Footage of the incident surfaced on social media platforms on Thursday, providing further details of how the freak accident took place.
In the video, the truck can be seen approaching the bridge before its load collides. The impact of the collision causes the truck to come to an abrupt halt.
The container is then seen falling off the flat rack and onto a car and mini truck that alongside the truck before rolling to the side.

According to an eyewitness, the truck had been swerving moments before the accident.
‘I noticed the truck with the huge container as I was driving behind it in the slow lane. When it reached the bridge, the container hit the bridge, then fell onto the fast lane and crushed a mini truck and a red VW Polo before rolling off the road,’ IOL quoted an eyewitness as saying.
‘I got out of my car with other motorists, and we ran to assist. We managed to get one person out from the red VW Polo, but when we reached the mini truck, I could see the driver was already gone. It was too much to bear, and I had to leave the scene.’
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Macassar police have subsequently opened a case of culpable homicide as investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident continues.
