Shocking scenes of chaos erupting in the parking area of N1 City Mall over the weekend have been circulating online, showing bottles hurled, fights breaking out, and a man narrowly escaping being run over, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The footage captured loud popping sounds, which initially sparked fears of gunfire, but these were later reportedly attributed to a vehicle backfiring, according to community Facebook page WAAR Brandit INNI KAAP.
Once the first video went viral, more information began to spread on social media. Accounts from others who say they were there point to a distinct order of events that preceded the mayhem. A Facebook comment that went viral claimed that taxis pulled up to the parking lot with loud music, attracting about 200 young individuals who started dancing, according to IOL.
There is also much debate online over whether the loud sounds heard in the videos was actually a car backfiring as one account claimed, or gunshots. One Facebook user, Chanice Swart, commented, ‘My husbands car back fires now and then and I know the difference between back fire and gun shots and this was clearly not back fire, those are gun shots heard‘
Reports indicate the unrest was triggered by the alleged theft of a cellphone during a gathering of around 200 young people. Social media reactions to the videos have largely noted that the people in the video appear to be young men, launching an online discussion on the state of the youth in South Africa.
One Facebook user, Keith Felix, commented, ‘Parents have no control over [their] children‘ while user Marieta Matthys commented, ‘Definitely an indication that groups of teenagers should not be allowed in malls anymore…‘
Mall management confirmed that criminal incidents took place on Saturday, 2 May 2026, adding that on-site security teams responded swiftly alongside police and emergency services.
‘The safety and security of our shoppers, tenants and staff remains our highest priority,‘ the mall said in a statement to IOL. ‘The police are investigating, and the mall will continue to work closely with law enforcement and support their efforts in every way possible. All further enquiries should be directed to SAPS.’
However, South African Police Service (SAPS) told Cape {town} Etc that it has no official record of the incident.
It remains unclear whether any injuries were sustained or if arrests have been made.
