The guardian angels of the mountains jumped into action again on Saturday afternoon when a 52-year-old woman had to be airlifted off Lion’s Head after a hiking accident left her unable to walk, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The hiker, who had been descending the popular Cape Town trail with her daughter, reportedly slipped and sustained a leg injury. Her daughter immediately contacted emergency services, prompting a swift response from Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR).
A small rescue crew aboard the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness (WCGHW) EMS helicopter was dispatched to the scene. After being hoisted near the injured hiker, a WCGHW EMS paramedic stabilised her on the mountainside before securing her into a rescue harness.
The patient was lifted into the helicopter and flown to a nearby landing zone, where she was transferred to hospital for further care.
Having recounted the incident, WSAR highlighted the importance of having access to the correct emergency number (021 937 0300) when venturing onto the mountain. It was the quick action taken by the hiker’s daughter to contact WSAR that likely resulted in the smooth and efficient rescue of her mother.
