A video of Helen Zille swimming in a water-filled pothole in Douglasdale has sparked fierce debate online, after the Democratic Alliance’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate used the stunt to highlight what she calls the collapse of basic infrastructure in the city.
In the clip shared on social media, Zille jokingly refers to the crater as a ‘free Saturday afternoon swim’, even attempting a backstroke while pointing to what she describes as a long-standing service delivery failure.
The large pool of water, according to residents, formed after a burst pipe that has been repaired multiple times over the years, only to fail again.
The unusual protest comes as Zille places infrastructure decay at the centre of her campaign ahead of the 2026 local government elections under the banner of the Democratic Alliance.
The incident unfolded on Balder Road in Douglasdale, where frustrated residents had days earlier staged their own ‘pool party’ beside the flooded excavation.
After coverage by the Fourways Review on 25 March and growing attention on social media, residents were surprised when Zille arrived on 28 March and took a swim herself.
By the morning of 29 March, trucks from Joburg Water and the Johannesburg Road Agency were on site. Crews began flushing out the pooled water, repairing the leak and installing new pipes, working into the evening.
Responding to the incident, Dada Morero, Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, said the burst was caused by a steel pipe that had repeatedly failed over the past three years.

‘Johannesburg Water responded swiftly to the incident on Sunday, 29 March, completing repairs that very evening. Following careful monitoring of the leak repair, they proceeded with backfilling last night. The team is now on site, working diligently to clean up and restore normalcy while ensuring everyone’s safety,’ Morero said.
He added that he visited the site on Tuesday morning and urged residents including Zille to report service delivery problems through the city’s Joburg Connect App rather than remain silent.

While opinions remain divided over Zille’s theatrics, the spectacle appears to have achieved at least one immediate result: long-awaited repairs to a problem residents say has plagued their street for years.
