Cape Town comedian Dalin Oliver is embracing the tumultuous circumstances of being stranded in Dubai amidst escalating tensions following airstrikes reportedly launched from Iran, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The attacks, which inflicted damage on the iconic Dubai International Airport, have left Oliver and many other South African citizens grappling with the unexpected realities of their travel plans.
Despite the serious situation, Oliver has chosen to share updates on his experience with a signature touch of humour.
In a recent Facebook post, Oliver detailed his experience, expressing both his surprise and wonder at the unfolding events. ‘I am still stuck in Dubai, but I feel very safe,’ he reassured his followers.
He praised the South African government for its effective communication and ensuring calmness among the locals and visitors alike. ‘The government has done an amazing job in keeping calmness and safety amongst the locals who live here and the individuals who are on holiday or in transit,’ he said.
Oliver recounted his surreal experience, describing the sounds of incoming missiles echoing in the air. ‘Last night, or this morning at least, at about 1am, we were getting food and you can hear the missiles. It sounded like a big airplane. Maybe even a hairdryer that’s close to you,’ he explained.
What struck him most was the unexpected alerts blaring from cell phones around him, warning of possible attacks. ‘You check your message, and it tells you to look out. There’s a possible attack happening, and then you must get to shelter,’ he shared, laughing at the irony of receiving such notices.
‘Great. Right? And I was laughing because the South African amigos, I’ve never experienced this before,’
Oliver drew humorous comparisons to memories from back home in Cape Town, notably likening missile alerts to the sirens used at Muizenberg Beach when sharks are spotted.
‘We don’t get SMSs to warn us about danger. We get SMSs to just get a funeral plan or to remind us about our TV license,’ he remarked, connecting with his audience through shared experiences and comedic adeptness.
Despite the turmoil surrounding him, Oliver maintains a positive outlook, emphasising safety and peace. His infectious spirit shines through as he stated, ‘As a South African, we find humour in the toughest of times, because that’s what has carried us as people,’
Oliver concluded his heartfelt message by thanking his followers for their support, noting that this experience is one for the books, as he humourously dubbed his situation the ‘shock spotter ear,’
