Walmart is wasting no time expanding its footprint in South Africa, with its second local store set to open its doors at Fourways Mall in Johannesburg on Friday, 28 November 2025.
The launch comes just days after the retailer’s debut at Clearwater Mall, signalling a rapid rollout strategy aimed at establishing the global giant’s presence across the country.
The Fourways branch will officially open at 8am, where store manager Lunghani Lincoln Mathebula will lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Walmart confirmed that the new store has created 80 permanent positions, with many of them offered to young South Africans looking for their first jobs.
The retailer’s Clearwater opening was described internally as ‘a massive success,’ with shoppers turning up in large numbers and quickly snapping up international products that are rarely available in South African supermarkets. Many of the Clearwater favourites have been earmarked for Fourways from the very first day of trading, as reported by Business Tech.

Customers at the new store can expect shelves filled with imported soft drinks such as Fanta Strawberry, Fanta Peach and Dr Pepper, alongside American sweets like Pop-Tarts, Swedish Fish, Nerds and Sour Patch Kids. The product lineup also includes premium cuts of meat such as Sparta marbled sirloin steaks and Deli-Co lamb lollies, plus Walmart-exclusive collectibles like Fuggler plush toys and Hot Wheels items, including the 80th Anniversary Kombi that has become a sought-after find.
Shoppers eager for an early look at the Fourways offering can preview the selection on the Walmart Africa app. Those within a 5 km radius will also have the option of 60-minute delivery once the store goes live.
The expansion into fully branded stores marks a new chapter for Walmart in South Africa, despite the company having operated locally for years through Massmart. Walmart originally purchased a 51% stake in Massmart in 2010, completed a full acquisition in 2022, and eventually delisted the group. After prolonged struggles with brands like Game, Walmart announced in September 2025 that it would transition to rolling out its own stores.
Through the new outlets, the retailer is introducing its global ‘everyday low price’ model, offering an extensive range of products—from groceries and frozen foods to homeware, clothing, electronics, toys and seasonal items. Rather than relying heavily on short-term promotions, Walmart emphasises stable, consistently low pricing across essential goods.
Andrea Albright, executive vice president and chief growth officer for Walmart International, called the brand’s South African launch ‘much more than a business milestone,’ adding that the company aims to help customers ‘save money and live better’ by keeping the total cost of household essentials as low as possible.
With strong early reception and a clear pricing strategy, Walmart is betting big on the South African market, and all signs suggest locals are ready for it.
