While many South Africans woke up to the news that SA swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker won the country’s first gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, residents in parts of Gauteng were woken up by a tremor.

According to IOL, the spokesperson for the Council for GeoScience, Mahlatse Mononela, confirmed that it was not a tremor but in fact an earthquake.
Mononela says the data indicates that the earthquake measured a 3.5 magnitude on the Richter scale and that it doesn’t show whether it occurred in a mining area.
