A South African mother has expressed her concern regarding the sale of alcohol at petrol station forecourt shops. In a video posted on Twitter by SA Against Drunk Driving, the mother calls for the sale of alcohol to be halted as she has lost her son to someone who had been drinking and driving.
The bereaved mother says “I am the voice to all the victims of drinking and driving in South Africa. I am the voice of all the families who have been totally traumatised by the death or serve injury to their loved ones.”

Meanwhile, the lobby group Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance South Africa (SAAPA SA) have also called for the sale of alcohol at petrol stations to be stopped, indicating that allowing petrol stations to sell alcohol in the country will be problematic, Business Tech reports.
Cape {town} Etc reported in June that alcohol will soon be sold at various BP petrol stations in Gauteng and the Western Cape after the petrol retailer launched ‘wine on the go’ on Thursday, June 17, at one of their petrol stations in Radiokop, north of Johannesburg.
However, a petition has also been started to stop the sale of alcohol at petrol stations in South Africa. According to the petition, making alcohol available at petrol stations sends the wrong message, especially as the government is looking at ways to tackle alcohol abuse. “The impact on our citizens, our health system, our fiscus is enormous – think of the trauma caused by crashes, stabbings, Gender-Based Violence, sexual abuse etc,” the petition read.
