The raging fire on Paarl Mountain has significantly subsided, but firefighters remain vigilant as hotspots continue to flare up due to dense fuel loads in the area, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Teams from the Drakenstein Farm Watch (DFW) and local fire services have worked tirelessly, earning praise from the community for their heroic efforts in protecting lives and property.
The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM) Fire Services, supported by multiple partners, battled the wildfire across challenging terrain on the mountain’s slopes. Yesterday, crews spent hours in active property protection, preventing the fire from reaching residential areas. Despite the fire’s intensity, no property damage has been reported so far.
Footage of a helicopter losing its bag over the local Voortrekker building during yesterday’s operations has also been posted and widely shared on social media.
On the ground, three teams from NCC Environmental Services have been reinforcing fire lines, while firefighting crews from CWDM, Drakenstein, and Stellenbosch Municipalities remain stationed to monitor hotspots and ensure residential safety.
DFW volunteers, who stayed on site through the night, have been lauded for their selfless service. Residents, understandably concerned about the fire’s proximity to their homes, expressed gratitude for the unwavering commitment of these teams.
Efforts to control the fire will continue as crews work around the clock to secure the area and prevent further outbreaks. Officials urge residents to remain cautious and report any new fire activity immediately.
