Breaching benefits
A breach reconnects the lagoon to the sea, allowing salt water, nutrients and small marine life to move into the estuary and giving the system a flushing flow that carries accumulated sediments and organic matter out to the ocean.
Such openings commonly follow heavy rain and raised river flows and are important for juvenile marine fish that use estuaries as nurseries before returning to sea to spawn.
Timing is critical: an opening that coincides with post-spawning juvenile recruitment delivers the greatest ecological benefit (The Mission Fly Fishing Magazine).

Experts caution that a forced opening at the wrong time or when water levels are too low can fail to produce the scouring flows needed to reset the system and may hinder recovery for seasons to come.
Decisions must be evidence-based and tailored to each estuary (The Mission Fly Fishing Magazine).
Residents and visitors should avoid crossing the breaching channel, keep children and pets away from fast currents; and obey municipal signage.
Officials will monitor the mouth and advise when conditions are safe for recreation again.
