On Tuesday, 22 February, commuters looking to head home from the Woodstock MyCiTi bus stop had to adjust their plans as a fire forced the transport service to reroute and avoid the stop altogether.
The bus went up in flames after passengers and the bus driver managed to make their way off and onto the platform at 3:15pm, and the City of Cape Town confirmed that everyone was safe, as per News24.
Fire and Rescue Services responded to the incident, however, there is no official word on what caused the bus to catch fire. According to Urban Mobility Mayco member Rob Quintas, the initial reports have stated that the bus burnt out, while others report that it could be due to a mechanical fault. The Woodstock station and red road have also been damaged as a result of the incident.
A thorough investigation will be done into what Quintas states is an “ exceptional incident,” emphasising that MyCiTi buses are routinely serviced, inspected and maintained in terms of the City’s contract with the operator, as per IOL.
