A video has gone viral on social media showing a policeman fighting off SAPS colleagues at a taxi rank in Cape Town. The man finds himself surrounded by several other police officers and can be seen doing flying kicks and martial arts moves as his colleagues try to restore calm.

An officer can then be seen using pepper spray as a means to try to calm down the man, as bystanders take videos and scream in background.

According to Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, SAPS is aware of the incident where the “police member stationed at Mitchells Plain SAPS acted out of character” and he has been referred to a medical facility for assistance.

Meanwhile IPID spokesperson, Grace Langa said that the matter in the video does not fall under the IPID mandate, and they are therefore not investigating the case. This is because the “officer seen assaulting his colleagues was wearing uniform but off duty meaning he committed the Assault not in the execution of his duties as outlined in IPID Act.”
