A quiet workday took an unforgettable turn when a man identified as James found himself battling an uninvited squirrel in the middle of a virtual meeting, a moment that has since captured widespread attention online.
The bizarre encounter unfolded live on a Microsoft Teams call, transforming an ordinary professional setting into an unexpected spectacle that colleagues watched unfold in real time, as per The South African.
James had settled into his home office for a meeting with about seven associates when faint noises began echoing from the fireplace behind him. At first, he tried to carry on speaking, but the distraction quickly escalated into panic.
‘It’s my turn to speak, and what I’m trying to do is get a complete sentence out. At the same time, I’m like ‘Oh my God, something is in here’,’ he recalled.
Moments later, the situation became clear, and chaotic. A squirrel suddenly emerged from the chimney, sending James scrambling for safety while still connected to the call.
As the animal moved through the room, James reacted instinctively, as a baseball bat nearby caught his attention.
‘I’m a big Cincinnati Reds fan. I love baseball. As I’m getting ready to fight or flight, that bat was within arm’s reach,’ he explained.
The video shows him grabbing the bat, shouting in alarm, and jumping onto his desk while attempting to ward off the startled animal.
All the while, his colleagues remained connected, unsure whether they were witnessing a prank or a genuine emergency.
‘The squirrel came down from the chimney,’ he added, describing the surreal moment.
In the middle of the chaos, James repeatedly called out for assistance from Julie, the family’s nanny.
‘Julie, Julie,’ he shouted during the ordeal.
‘Jules is our fearless nanny… if there’s one person I know I can count on, it’s Jules,’ he later said. Unfortunately, she had stepped out for lunch, leaving him to face the unexpected intruder alone.
‘I’m screaming for Jules in an empty house,’ he added, noting he had no idea the meeting was still broadcasting the entire episode live.
Despite the panic, James stressed that he holds no ill will toward animals.
‘I love animals, it’s not that I don’t like animals. But the reality is, you can see it jump… I totally lose concept of what’s going on around me outside of what I’m facing right there,’ he said.
The squirrel eventually retreated back into the fireplace. Animal control was later contacted, and the animal was safely trapped and released outside his home.
‘I’m happy to report that the squirrel was captured in a trap safely and let free outside of my home,’ James confirmed.

What could have been a private mishap quickly became a big deal online after the video spread among coworkers and beyond. James says the moment spread fast within his company, leading to jokes, and even custom T–shirts.
‘It spread like wildfire pretty quickly within our company,’ he said, adding that he has chosen to embrace the humour surrounding the incident.
‘My kids do poke fun at me from time to time when they see a squirrel getting close… at the end of the day, I’m happy I was able to have this on camera, and people can smile and laugh.’
