As heavy rain lashed parts of the Western Cape this past weekend, bringing flooding and road disruptions across Cape Town and surrounding areas, a lighter, and somewhat daring, moment emerged from Stellenbosch.
This follows a viral video, captioned ‘Stellies students as soon as it starts raining’, that shows two young men, assumed to be students, wakeboarding through a flooded roadway while being pulled along by a bakkie.
The video shows them skimming across pooled water with surprising balance, transforming a flooded road into an improvised course.

Meanwhile, a second circulating video paints a broader picture of the situation in Stellenbosch, showing just how significantly the flooding affected parts of the area, with roads partially submerged after hours of downpours, as the Western Cape edges closer to winter.
Online reactions to the clip quickly followed, with viewers adding a mix of humour and disbelief.
One user commented: ‘I know those Uber prices were looking scary today. They must just cancel classes for the whole week once.’
Another added: ‘That time it ain’t even OFFICIALLY winter yet.’
A further comment read: ‘Cape winters are brutal, it sent me straight back to Gauteng.’
One other user quipped: ‘Need to invest in a boat.’
