This work is set to commence at 9am on 6 November and is expected to conclude by midnight on 7 November. The maintenance involves repairs to a 450mm stormwater pipe, and as a result, a 500mm water pipe will be turned off, affecting surrounding areas.
Residents and businesses located along Burnham and Gabriel Roads are urged to prepare by storing sufficient water ahead of the shutdown. ‘We recommend that affected residents and businesses fill clean, sealed containers with water before the disruption to ensure they have enough supply,’ stated the Water and Sanitation Directorate.
To assist those impacted, a water tanker will be stationed at Pick n Pay on Gabriel Road. The maintenance work will extend beyond Plumstead; to alleviate the effects of the shutdown, the City plans to redirect alternative water sources from Muizenberg to Constantia. However, this may result in reduced water pressure in areas including Capricorn, Costa Da Gama, Tokai and Retreat.
The Directorate emphasises the importance of these maintenance activities for ensuring the long-term reliability of water infrastructure. ‘This work is part of our proactive maintenance and upgrade programme aimed at ensuring continuous water supply by addressing issues related to unaccounted-for water,’ the entity explained.
Residents are also advised to keep taps closed during the maintenance period to prevent leaks or damage when the water supply resumes. It is possible that some initial water discoloration may occur due to trapped air in the pipes, but this should clear if the water is allowed to stand.
