The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is sounding the alarm over a significant shortage of O-negative blood supplies, an issue made more pressing by the anticipated demands of the upcoming Easter weekend, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Currently, the WCBS reports a troubling drop in blood donations across all groups, leaving them with only a two-day supply of the O-negative blood type.
Health officials stress that a minimum of five days’ supply is necessary to ensure that hospitals can respond effectively to emergencies in the region.
For the last two weeks, O-negative blood stocks have been under immense pressure, with the usual inflow of donations not meeting the rising needs of local healthcare facilities.
The urgency for O-negative blood is particularly critical because it is often the type used in life-threatening emergencies when there is no time to verify a patient’s blood type, making it a vital resource in emergency rooms.
Public Relations Manager at WCBS, Marike Carli has emphasised the importance of immediate action, stating, ‘O-negative blood is often used in life-threatening emergencies when there is no time to determine a patient’s blood type. We are calling on all blood donors to donate blood this week to help restore our blood stocks to a healthy level,’

As the Easter weekend approaches, a time commonly associated with an increase in accidents and medical emergencies, the call for blood donors is more pressing than ever.
With many regular donors potentially unavailable during this period, WCBS is urging those who are eligible to donate to step forward.
Eligibility criteria for donation are straightforward. If you are between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh over 50kg, are in good health, and adhere to safe sexual practices, you are likely eligible to donate. The donation process only takes about 30 minutes, and each unit of blood collected can make a remarkable difference in saving lives.
‘If you have been thinking about becoming a blood donor, now would be a great time to start donating,’ Carli added.
She reiterated that whether you are a seasoned donor or giving blood for the first time, your contribution could provide critical assistance in emergencies.
