The festive season is around the corner and the Cape Flats is going into the season fully prepared. The area will receive an additional 250 Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers to aid in the fight against crime in various hotspot areas as December quickly approaches, reports News24.
Areas such as Delft, Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein, Mfuleni, Nyanga, Harare, Gugulethu, and Mitchells Plain have already seen 800 officers deployed over the last few months.
According to Premier Alan Winde and Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz, the latest group of officers are still currently in training and are set to be “deployed in communities” including Atlantis, Philippi East, and Samora Machel by December.
“LEAP officers are a critical component of the Western Cape Government’s efforts to halve the murder rate by 2029 through a combination of violence prevention and law enforcement initiatives,” said Winde.
These additional recruits will be deployed to all top 10 murder stations in the Western Cape, along with maintaining their presence in areas such as Bishop Lavis, Bonteheuwel, Philippi and Hanover Park, to make sure that these areas remain safe and stable for residents.
LEAP officers appear to be doing phenomenal work in these areas as the past few months ha has seen a rounding up of 7507 suspicious people, which were searched in these hot-spot areas. These massive searches have yielded results as a total of 115 people were arrested for various crimes, including 67 possession of drugs and 17 for the possession of illegal firearms, as per IOL.
