As the long weekend approaches, the Western Cape Government (WCG) has ramped up its appeal for motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits, particularly following a disturbing trend of excessive speeding observed by law enforcement officers, reports Cape {town} Etc.
WCG reports that from 10 to 16 March, a total of 200 speeding fines were issued across the province, with one reckless driver clocking in at a shocking 160km/h in a 120km/h zone.
Excessive speeding continues to pose a significant risk on South African roads, frequently contributing to serious crashes, injuries and even fatalities. The Western Cape Government remains steadfast in its belief that prioritising road safety is imperative for all motorists, especially during busy travel periods.
Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, emphasised the dangers posed by speeding, stating, ‘Speeding not only increases the likelihood of incidents, but also reduces reaction time, making it more difficult to avoid hazards. The faster a vehicle travels, the greater the force of impact in a collision, leading to often devastating consequences.’
High-speed driving severely limits a driver’s ability to respond to sudden obstacles and changes in traffic conditions. Furthermore, it complicates the navigation of bends and maintaining vehicle stability, heightening the risk for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. As the long weekend signals an uptick in travel, the call for caution resonates louder than ever.
Despite the Western Cape being celebrated for its quality road infrastructure and round-the-clock enforcement operations, reckless behaviour remains a critical issue. The Western Cape Government expressed a clear message: every motorist bears the responsibility to contribute to road safety.
‘We urge all drivers to remain mindful of their speed, drive responsibly, and make safety a priority – not just during the long weekend, but every time they get behind the wheel.’
‘The lives of our fellow citizens depend on it,’ Sileku added.
