The SA Weather Service has warned Capetonians to expect severe conditions on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Thunderstorms and gale-force winds will lash the coast between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas from Wednesday afternoon. The weather will lighten up by late Thursday morning.

Even the City of Cape Town is on standby preparing for severe weather. Areas affected include the Cape Metro, south-eastern parts of the Cape Winelands and the extreme northern parts of the Overberg District.

Disaster risk management spokesperson Charlotte Powell said there are good indictions of thunderstorm activity.

“The main disruptive weather potentially coming from the severe thunderstorms is heavy downpours of rain, which could lead to localised flooding, strong and damaging winds, as well as a possibility of large amounts of small hail,” said Powell.

“All City Services and applicable external agencies are being placed on stand-by to deal with any potential consequences related to the weather,” said said.

Although the impact of the storms are expected to be minor, there is a possibility of flooding and strong winds could also cause damage.
