According to SAWS, the incoming cold front is expected to hit south-western parts of the Western Cape, resulting in strong westerly to north-westerly winds of 50 to 65kph, with gusts reaching up to 70kph throughout the day on Sunday.
The weather service added the winds are expected to moderate from the west in the afternoon.
Additionally, Sunday morning is forecasted to see rain and showers over the western parts of the Western Cape before spreading to the east.
‘Rainfall accumulations in the western parts are expected to be 15 to 30mm, reaching 35 to 50mm in the mountainous areas of the Cape Winelands and north-western Overberg districts,’ said SAWS.
‘Due to the ground already saturated, localised flooding of roads and susceptible settlements may occur.’
The Yellow level 2 warning for strong winds takes effect from midnight on Sunday and remains valid until 11:59pm while the Yellow level 2 warning for disruptive rains takes effect from 6am on Sunday and remains valid until midnight on Monday, 5 August.
Meanwhile, SAWS adds that very cold conditions where day-time temperatures falling below 10ºC are expected in places with temperatures feeling colder than the measured values due to the accompanying wind chill factor. Snowfalls are also likely over the Western Cape mountains.
The combination of very cold, wet and windy conditions may also result in possible risks for vulnerable pets, livestock and crops.
The advisory comes into effect from midnight on Sunday and remains valid until midnight on Tuesday, 6 August.
