The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 1 Warning for disruptive rainfall lasting until Saturday night, posing potential risks of localised flooding and exacerbating previously saturated soil conditions from earlier this week’s frontal system.
As the skies loom ominously over the city, local authorities have mobilised resources to address anticipated weather-related impacts, Cape {town} Etc reports.
City officials have assured residents that they remain vigilant, closely monitoring the unfolding situation. In preparation for potential disruptions, services are in place, with teams ready to tackle urgent needs, such as distributing flood kits, restoring electricity, and unblocking roadways.
The provision of milling, sand, and sandbags to impacted communities will also form a crucial part of the response strategy.
In light of the escalating need for humanitarian assistance, the City has collaborated with a network of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to continue outreach efforts.
These initiatives include the provision of hot meals, blankets, and personal hygiene packs to those affected by the adverse weather conditions.
To facilitate community support, the City has designated seven fire stations as donation drop-off points, available 24 hours a day. Locations include Constantia, Goodwood, Hout Bay, Lakeside, Roeland Street, Strand, and Wynberg.
Individuals are encouraged to contribute non-perishable food items such as rice, maize meal, tinned fish, tinned beans, baby formula, and personal hygiene supplies.
‘We are grateful to our NGO partners for their unwavering support during these challenging times, every donation counts and can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected,’ City said.
As of now, nearly 3,000 households have reported experiencing weather-related challenges, prompting NGOs to provide assistance in the form of hot meals and blankets to over 7,755 individuals in communities including Vygieskraal IFS, Nooitgedacht, Gugulethu’s Waterfront, and others.
In addition, the Respond Coalition has stepped in to provide extra water pumps to help evacuate water from heavily affected areas. For those wishing to assist further, donors can arrange for collection by emailing [email protected].
