The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow level 2 warning for damaging winds, cautioning residents and holidaymakers along parts of the Western Cape and Namaqua coast to prepare for strong to near-gale force conditions this weekend, reports Cape {town} Etc.
According to SAWS, the warning is valid from Saturday, 20 December, at midnight until 11:59pm on Sunday, 21 December, and is driven by an Atlantic high-pressure system positioned to the south-west of the country, combined with a trough over the interior.
This weather pattern is expected to create a tight pressure gradient along the coast.
SAWS said the system will bring strong to near-gale force south to south-easterly winds of 50 to 62kph, with gusts reaching between 70 and 85kph along the west and south-west coastal areas on Saturday.
These conditions are expected to shift to the south coast on Sunday, with winds becoming easterly to south-easterly at similar speeds.
The weather service warned that the damaging winds could result in:
- A build-up of sand on coastal routes, making driving conditions hazardous in places
- Small harbours and ports may experience temporary disruption
- Navigation at see could become difficult, particularly for small vessels, which face an increased risk of taking on water or capsizing.
SAWS also cautioned that the strong winds could lead to localised damage to temporary structures and increase the risk of runaway fires, especially in dry and exposed areas.
Residents, boat operators and holidaymakers are urged to remain alert, secure loose items, avoid unnecessary marine activity, and follow official weather updates as conditions develop.
