The Western Cape Government has stepped up to the crease with a substantial commitment of R15 million aimed at enhancing cricket facilities in preparation for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The funding, announced on Thursday, 2 April 2026, will facilitate vital upgrades to both the historic WSB Newlands Cricket Ground and Boland Park in Paarl, which are set to host matches during the tournament.
Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, expressed confidence in the region’s ability to successfully stage major international events.
‘The Western Cape has shown that we are capable of successfully hosting World Cup events, and we look forward to seeing the Cricket World Cup here next year. These kinds of events help to support our local economy as they not only bring economic investment, but they also support job creation,’ he stated.
‘The Western Cape Government is proud to contribute to ensure that our stadiums are ready for this exciting event,’
Both the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) and Cricket Boland have signed Memoranda of Agreement (MOAs) with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, formally legitimising the financial backing.
WPCA CEO Corrie van Zyl voiced gratitude for the support, noting that it would ensure WSB Newlands Cricket Ground is equipped to host world-class matches. ‘This investment strengthens our ability to deliver a memorable World Cup experience for players, fans, and the broader community,’ van Zyl said.
