Nine of the Western Cape’s twelve proclaimed fishing harbours have recently received a significant facelift with the installation of high-quality, high-visibility signage, reports Cape {town} Etc.
This initiative is part of a broader revitalisation effort spearheaded by Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Dion George, during his Fishing for Freedom Tour.
In a move that aims to engage coastal communities, fishers, and small businesses, the signage upgrades are positioned as more than just aesthetic improvements.

‘These signage upgrades are more than cosmetic. They are a statement of intent. They reflect our Department’s commitment to restore dignity, pride, and functionality to communities who rely on our working harbours,’ George stated, emphasising the importance of these changes in inspiring confidence in local economies.
The harbours that now sport the new signage include:
- Kalk Bay
- Hout Bay
- Elands Bay
- Doring Bay
- Saldanha Bay (Pepperbay)
- Lamberts Bay
- St Helena Bay
- Laaiplek
- Yzerfontein
As for the remaining harbours, such as Arniston, Stilbay, Struisbay, Hermanus, Gansbaai, and Gordons Bay, site visits have been completed, and preparations for the signage installation are already underway. ‘Final installation dates will be announced soon,’ reassured George, highlighting the Department’s proactive approach to wrap up the remaining enhancements.

While the mandate for harbour infrastructure falls under different governmental departments, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is dedicated to fostering a welcoming and efficiently managed environment across all proclaimed fishing harbours.
The success of this signage project is reflective of a broader commitment to rejuvenate fishing communities and promote sustainable development, restoring the Western Cape’s harbours into vibrant centres of economic and cultural activity.
‘We are determined to uplift and improve our harbours to unlock their economic potential. Our teams are working tirelessly to finalise the remaining installations, and we look forward to celebrating the full revitalisation of these harbours,’ George concluded.
