A little peace of mind could go a long way for Western Cape motorists this month. In celebration of Mobility Month, the Western Cape Government is offering free vehicle inspections at selected testing centres to help ensure vehicles are roadworthy and safe before hitting the road.
The initiative is aimed particularly at scholar transport and public transport operators, with checks carried out by qualified examiners. These inspections are designed to help drivers identify potential safety issues early, long before they become serious hazards on the road.
‘These checks give motorists peace of mind before setting off on their journeys,’ said Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku. ‘Too many drivers experience mechanical problems on highways and busy roads. This initiative helps reduce that risk.’
As reported by SmileFM, the free inspections will focus on key vehicle safety components such as tyres, brake lights, suspension, and wipers, which are all crucial elements that keep passengers and other road users safe.
While these are not full roadworthy tests, the department said the purpose is preventative. After each inspection, motorists will receive a printed report highlighting any issues that need attention.
Importantly, the free checks will not include fines, warrants, or administrative checks. ‘This is about promoting safety, not enforcement,’ the department added.

Sileku emphasised that the campaign is part of a broader provincial effort to reduce crashes and fatalities involving public transport vehicles.
‘By working together, we can prevent crashes caused by avoidable mechanical failures and make our roads safer for everyone,’ he highlighted.
The Western Cape Government hopes the campaign will encourage more motorists to take proactive steps to maintain their vehicles, especially ahead of the busy festive season when road traffic spikes.
