The Western Cape is on high alert as the South African Weather Services (SAWS) and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) have issued strong warnings concerning severe weather expected from Thursday to Sunday, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Anton Bredell, the Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, shared these critical developments after a briefing with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre.
With a Yellow level 4 warning for disruptive rainfall now in effect across large parts of the province, communities should prepare for potential impacts from 3 July until 6 July 2025.
This warning follows a period of significant rainfall that has already saturated soil in the region.
The government is urging residents to take this warning seriously, as the anticipated rainfall could result in hazardous conditions, including flooding, mudslides, rockfalls, and falling trees.
In addition to the rainfall warning, a Yellow level 2 warning for waves has been issued for the southern coastline, which encompasses the Overberg and Garden Route districts, set to remain in effect from 5 July to 7 July 2025.
The combination of heavy rainfall and high waves poses a critical risk, particularly along the coast, where strong winds and wave action could lead to dangerous conditions.
‘The forecasted rainfall may lead to flooding and other risky situations,’ Minister Bredell warned.
He acknowledged the increase in provincial dam levels from 60% to 67% following the recent rains, reflecting a boost to local water resources. However, he emphasised the need for vigilance in light of the upcoming weather systems.
The DWS has ramped up the frequency of dam monitoring, aiming to ensure water infrastructure remains reliable as the weather intensifies.
‘Farmers and landowners are advised to regularly inspect their dams and water systems, reporting any signs of distress to their local disaster centres,’ Bredell instructed.
The Western Cape Disaster Management Centre is coordinating efforts with municipalities and relevant departments to ensure preparedness and a swift response as conditions evolve.
Citizens are strongly urged to avoid fast-flooding streams and low-lying bridges and to stay informed about local conditions through trustworthy media outlets.
