The Western Cape has 7416 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 98 868 confirmed cases and 87 998 recoveries. Another 30 deaths were recorded, bringing the total COVID-19 related death toll in the province to 3454.

Of the active cases, there are 1196 hospitalisations with 247 in ICU or high care.

Premier Alan Winde noted in the update that the Western Cape government welcomes the Health Ministers clarification that alert levels can be determined at provincial, metro or district level. As a result, Winde has written to Minister Mkhize and Cogta Minister Dlamini Zuma outlining their argument as to why the Western Cape could move to a different alert level.

“The Western Cape has passed its peak and currently has adequate platform capacity, to the extent that the MSF field hospital in Khayelitsha is in the process of closing and we will soon be considering whether all our field hospitals need to remain open,” he said.

The recommendations include allowing businesses which can open safely to be allowed to do so, and that the alcohol ban should be lifted, in conjunction with the implementation of smart measures aimed at reducing alcohol harms.

“We urge the Ministerial Advisory Committee to consider all of this information when making their recommendations.”
