The Western Cape has welcomed the new year with encouraging news regarding road safety, recording a significant decline in weekly road fatalities, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The period from 5 to 11 January 2026 saw a total of 11 fatal crashes leading to 12 fatalities, a notable drop from the 25 lives lost between 29 December 2025 and 4 January 2026.
Among the lives lost in the recent reporting period, eight were pedestrians, while two were motorcyclists, and the remaining two were drivers. This pattern highlights the critical need for ongoing efforts to improve road safety for those most exposed on the provincial road network.
Diligent enforcement measures have played a pivotal role in this reduction. The Provincial Traffic Services conducted 240 integrated roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints, and speed control operations across the province, which involved stopping over 51,000 vehicles.
In this operation, more than 15,000 fines were handed out for various traffic violations, with 79 motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Such statistics serve as a stark reminder of the risks posed by reckless driving and the necessity for strict adherence to traffic laws.
Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku expressed his cautious optimism regarding the fatalities’ decline, noting it as a testament to the relentless dedication of traffic officers. ‘The reduction in fatalities over the past week is encouraging and demonstrates the impact of sustained and visible enforcement on our roads,’ said Sileku.
However, he also reminded the public of the tragic reality that each death signifies a community left mourning.
Echoing this sentiment, Chief Director of Traffic Management Maxine Bezuidenhout highlighted the importance of fostering responsible road behaviours.
As the province resets to normal after the holiday influx and prepares for the reopening of schools, Bezuidenhout affirmed the commitment of traffic officers to maintain a visible presence on key routes.
‘We urge motorists to obey the rules of the road, remain patient, and be especially mindful of vulnerable road users,’ she stated.
‘Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists account for a significant portion of fatalities,’
