The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has cracked down on suppliers in the Western Cape for failing to meet standards outlined in the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), Cape {town} Etc reports.
After conducting thorough inspections, the NCC issued Compliance Notices to 14 suppliers, highlighting a range of violations, including improper labelling and unsafe food practices.
In Cape Town, 40 suppliers were inspected, with 12 found in breach of the CPA. Some of these violations included inadequate product labelling, such as missing ingredient information and improper pricing displays.
The Daily Voice reported that these suppliers included Fairfield Meat Express; Dadas Nutritious Foods and Spices; Bag It; Planet Sweets; Beadica 381 (Pty) Ltd trading as Fish for Africa; Die Visfabriek; Bismila Grand Parade Halaal; Amigos Fisheries; and Super Spar Cape Gate.
Other infractions included unsafe food delivery, as seen in the case of Country Glam’s subpar vegetable delivery, and Athena Fast Foods failing to display the prices of goods on the shelves.
The NCC is also investigating additional suppliers in provinces like KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Limpopo. Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu emphasised the Commission’s ongoing focus on expired and unsafe food products, stating that non-compliance continues to expose consumers to health risks.
As part of the NCC’s commitment to safeguarding consumers, it plans to continue its oversight efforts across South Africa.
