According to SAWS, westerly to south-westerly swells with wave heights of four to five metres are expected today (Saturday, 16 August) between Cape Agulhas and Saldanha Bay, spreading to Plettenberg Bay and Lambert’s Bay on Sunday morning before subsiding from Monday.
The weather service added that wave heights could possibly reach 5.5 to six metres from Sunday afternoon into the evening.
In terms of weather-based impacts, SAWS warned of difficulty in sea navigation as well as capsizing or taking on water of small vessels and personal watercraft such as kayaks.
Small harbours and ports may also experience localised disruptions for short periods of time.
‘Localised disruptions to beachfront activities are also likely,’ the weather service added. ‘Coastal users (e.g. rock angling) are at risk of being caught off guard and swept off low-lying rocks.’
The weather warning for damaging waves is currently in effect and remains valid until midnight on Monday, 19 August.
