The decision follows a request from the Western Cape MEC for Mobility, Isaac Sileku, urging the association to reconsider its actions.
In a statement, WCEA leadership acknowledged that reaching this decision was challenging.
However, after discussions by both the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) and Provincial Organising Body (POB), the association agreed to postpone the protest to allow time for further negotiations.
The MEC’s intervention follows a previous protest held by WCEA on 17 September 2024, during which the association submitted a memorandum listing their grievances and demands.
Subsequently, a constructive meeting with the MEC took place on 7 October 2024, where he acknowledged their concerns and requested additional time until November 2024 to address the issues.
WCEA leadership stated that the postponement will give the Department of Mobility a chance to engage with e-hailing app companies in search of solutions.
In parallel, WCEA has reached out to the National Minister of Transport to address issues that fall within the jurisdiction of the national government. The association is optimistic that a meeting with the national minister will be confirmed soon.
After the MEC’s meeting with the app companies, WCEA plans to hold a general meeting with its members and supporters to provide updates and discuss the next steps. Further announcements regarding this gathering will follow in due course.
The association emphasised its continued commitment to finding resolutions through dialogue while keeping its members informed and involved in the process.
