The Western Cape Premier Alan Winde visited the Kraaifontein Police Station on Monday, calling for improved resources and infrastructural support for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in a bid to tackle the escalating crime rates gripping Cape Town.
The visit was driven by the urgent need for direct engagement with police precinct leadership, particularly in areas like Kraaifontein, where violent crime has severely impacted the daily lives of residents, Cape {town} Etc reports.
‘The residents of Kraaifontein are understandably concerned and frustrated by the impact of violent crime on their daily lives. Through these oversight visits, I want to engage directly with priority SAPS precinct leadership to ensure that everything is being done to tackle crime head-on,’ stated Premier Winde during his visit.
Winde highlighted the dual importance of decisive policing and strong economic growth as pivotal strategies in the fight against crime, stating, ‘This is the most effective way to drive down crime,’
He reinforced the notion that improving security not only safeguards communities but also fosters an environment conducive to economic prosperity.
This oversight visit forms part of a broader initiative focusing on key high-crime precincts across the Western Cape, aimed at ensuring SAPS is fully equipped and proactive in combating crime.
Following this visit, Winde is scheduled to meet with acting Minister of Police, Professor Firoz Cachalia, to explore further measures that could reinforce policing in troubled areas.
During his engagement with the Kraaifontein SAPS leadership, Premier Winde was briefed on current crime trends, which include a worrying rise in violent crime, property-related offences, and gang activities. As these issues place considerable pressure on personnel and resources, Winde also took the opportunity to directly engage with officers to gain insight into their daily challenges.
The walk-through of the Kraaifontein police station allowed Winde to assess the conditions under which officers operate.
He evaluated the infrastructure, including office spaces, holding cells, and operational areas, noting how such conditions impact service delivery, staff morale, and the overall effectiveness of crime response.
Key challenges were brought to light during the visit, such as:
- The effective functioning of the Kraaifontein Community Policing Forum (CPF)
- A shortage of operational vehicles
- The need for improved use of crime intelligence, technology, and innovation
As Winde addressed the SAPS members, he expressed his recognition of the difficult working conditions they face.
He reiterated the Western Cape Government’s commitment to enhancing safety through close collaboration and improvements in crime intelligence. ‘These engagements are about taking the concerns of residents to SAPS leadership and ensuring that every possible intervention is explored to improve safety and protect our residents,’ Winde affirmed.
