Wolfgat, a small restaurant in Paternoster on South Africa’s West Coast has been named the 50th Best Restaurant in the World and the Best in Africa. This is the only South African eatery to find itself on the list of 50, so we’re clapping, cheering and doing a happy dance!

This prestigious event is based on the votes of more than 1 000 food experts around the world. Even though last year’s awards were cancelled, the 2021 results couldn’t have taken place at a better time to give restaurants that much-needed boost after suffering a tough blow as a result of the pandemic.
And this means big things for Chef Kobus van der Merwe and his team, who are sitting alongside international greats like Noma and Geranium in Copenhagen, who claimed the #1 and #2 spot respectively.

Chef Kobus took to Instagram to express his gratitude after bagging this huge achievement: “All our heroes – local and international chefs and restaurants that we admire and have been looking up to – are featured here, so it seems quite surreal and undeserved that we should be ranked amongst them.
“But we are honoured to be selected, and proud to represent South Africa, and Paternoster in particular, on the global stage. Given the extremely challenging past year-and-a-half we’ve faced globally, especially in the hospitality industry, recognition of this kind comes as a welcome moral boost.”
